Why PPE Matters on Every Site

Personal Protective Equipment — PPE — is the kit you wear to protect yourself when the job still carries risk after every other control has been put in place. As the training video puts it:

Personal protective equipment or PPE is important for every construction worker. Every worker on the job site should have and use the appropriate PPE.

PPE minimises your exposure to a wide range of hazards: sharp edges, falling objects, flying sparks, chemical splashes, harmful dust, and dangerous noise. For electricians and electrotechnical workers, it sits alongside the safe systems of work you already follow every day — but it is important to understand where PPE fits in the bigger picture.

Under the hierarchy of control, PPE is the last line of defence, not the first. You should always try to eliminate or reduce a hazard at source before relying on kit worn on your body. PPE is not optional good practice — it is backed by law. The key pieces of UK legislation you should know are:

  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HASAWA) — the overarching duty for employers to provide a safe place and safe systems of work, and for workers to take reasonable care of themselves and others.
  • Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended in 2022) — require employers to provide suitable PPE free of charge, ensure it is compatible, maintained, and correctly used, and provide information and training. The 2022 amendment extended these duties to certain workers, not just employees.
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 — govern respiratory and skin protection where you work with dusts, mists, solvents, and other hazardous substances.
  • Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 — set out when hearing protection must be provided and worn.

As a worker, your side of the bargain is simple: use the PPE provided, wear it correctly, look after it, and report any damage or defects straight away.

Head Protection: The Hard Hat

Hard hats protect you from falling or flying objects, and some are rated to protect against accidental head contact with electrical hazards — a rating electricians should always check for.

You should put it on from the moment you set foot on the job site until the time you walk off.

A hard hat is made up of two essential parts:

  • The shell — absorbs and spreads the force of an impact.
  • The suspension (harness) — sits inside the shell and acts as a shock absorber, keeping a gap between your skull and the shell.

Both parts are necessary for full protection. To keep yours in service:

  • Never drill, paint, or clean it with solvents — these weaken the shell.
  • Inspect it routinely for dents, cracks, or deterioration.
  • Replace the suspension yearly and the shell every five years (per most manufacturers) if it passes inspection.
  • Replace it immediately if it takes a blow or is exposed to an electrical shock.

Harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures degrade a hard hat faster, so shorten your replacement intervals in tough conditions.

High-Visibility Clothing

Being seen is being safe. Workers around vehicles, plant, or mobile equipment are exposed to “struck-by” hazards, especially in low light. A good rule of thumb is to wear a high-visibility vest at all times on site, whatever the task, so plant operators and drivers can spot you.

Eye and Face Protection

Your choice of eye and face protection should be driven by the task and the hazards — impact from flying objects, chemical splashes, harmful dust, or radiation from welding.

You must wear impact resistant safety glasses anytime you could be exposed to flying material, even if you are not working directly with that material.

Know the difference between the three main types:

  1. Safety glasses — impact-resistant, for general protection against flying material.
  2. Goggles — form a seal around the eyes to shield against fragments, paint, and chemical splashes and sprays. Note that not all goggles are rated for impact.
  3. Face shields — protect the whole face against impacts, wood chips, and chemical splashes. Always check the impact rating.

Foot Protection

Foot injuries — nail punctures, twisted ankles, and crush injuries — are common in construction. Proper footwear can prevent or lessen them. On site you should wear boots with:

  • Slip-resistant and puncture-resistant soles to guard against nails and sharp debris underfoot.
  • Safety-toed (steel or composite) toecaps to protect against falling objects and crushing.

Trainers and tennis shoes are never acceptable site footwear. Look for boots carrying the relevant UK/EU safety standard markings (such as EN ISO 20345).

Hand Protection

Electrotechnical work exposes your hands to sharp and rough objects, chemicals, electricity, and flames. Wear the right glove for the task, and make sure it fits properly:

  • Knit gloves with a rubber palm — basic protection against minor cuts and abrasions.
  • Chemical-resistant gloves — for wet concrete, mortar, adhesives, or solvents.
  • Leather welding gloves — for work around heat and flame.
  • Rubber insulating gloves and sleeves — when working near or on electrical hazards. These must be the correct class for the voltage and inspected before use.

Hearing Protection

Many site tasks are loud enough to cause permanent hearing loss over time. Reach for earplugs or ear muffs when using drills, powder-actuated tools, pneumatic nailers, grinders, and other heavy equipment.

The effectiveness of hearing protection is measured by its Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) — the higher the NRR, the greater the reduction in sound exposure. Always fit earplugs exactly as the manufacturer directs, or they won’t give you the protection stated on the packet.

Respiratory Protection

Common site materials — paints, lacquers, insulation, sealants, and dusts — can seriously harm you if inhaled. Inhalation is one of the most common routes for hazardous substances to enter the body, which is why COSHH places such emphasis on respiratory protection.

The single most important factor with any respirator is a proper fit. A respirator that leaks around the seal offers little protection against dusts, mists, gases, vapours, and sprays. In the UK, tight-fitting respirators require face-fit testing, and facial hair can break the seal — something to plan for before the job starts.
